Resuming of the current football campaigns remains uncertain after the suspension of the Uganda Premier League and the FUFA Big league due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic.
UPL, FUFA and the clubs in the top flight and second division are on the edge of losing the last quarterly sponsorship from StarTimes the sponsors of both Leagues and the referees.
StarTimes is in a 10 year sponsorship deal with FUFA where it will inject $7.24 million(Shs26.7 billion) into Ugandan Football where each team in the Uganda Premier League is entitled to get Shs 19 million every quarter.
FUFA also recieves money to pay match officials and cater for other costs as the UPL secretariat also get a share to run the league operations.
However, FUFA and UPL could lose the last quarterly sponsorship package if the league doesn't resume acoording to the StarTimes' head of marketing based in Nairobi, Aldrine Nsubuga when talking to Football 256.
“Football was suspended, promotion of the league was put on hold, the fans no longer watch the league, journalists no longer report about the league because it’s on hold. So, if the league is not on, there is no TV value we are getting. There is no exposure, no viewership, we who target money through buying decoders and subscription have not made money,” Nsubuga remarked.
He added on, “Clubs wanting StarTimes to pay the funds for the last quarter are out of their minds, because the same way they are not making money, we are also not, our customers are also not making money because they are not working.”
With the 2020 financial year ending May, finances for the last quarter will only be released provided the situation stabilizes and the league resumes.
